Lawyer "gutted" by appeal rejection

The New Zealand lawyer representing a New Zealand man jailed in Cambodia says he's absolutely gutted his client's appeal was rejected.

Graham Cleghorn was sentenced to 20 years in jail in Cambodia in 2004 for raping five young women.

The 60-year-old has strenously denied the charges, and has waited almost three years for last week's appeal hearing.

In a judgement handed down today, the court found Cleghorn guilty of the charges, saying he called the victims into his room and forced them to have sex with him.

But Cleghorn's lawyer in Wellington, Greg King, says the appeal has just endorsed the original conviction.

Mr King says the original trial was shambolic and Cleghorn's defence lawyer at the time was not allowed to speak.
