Decision on Cleghorn appeal wanted

New Zealand's ambassador to Thailand says he will urge the Cambodian government to make a swift decision about whether to rehear an appeal for a New Zealand man jailed for rape.

Graham Cleghorn was jailed for 20 years in 2004 for raping five women.

An appeal against his conviction was held in January without his knowledge.

The ambassador Peter Rider, who is responsible for Cambodia says that country's justice minister has agreed to consider an application to rehear the appeal.

Rider says he will tell the minister on Saturday that Cleghorn must have a chance to present his case.

He says he would expect 15 days notice for any hearing.
